FUN FACT: In a league of its own

Based on population, Howard County is the fifth-largest county in Maryland. There are 12 Howard County public high schools, which together form the Howard County League. Amazingly, though, there is not a single private or independent school that offers football in Howard County.

Sure, there are football-playing private school options in nearby Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, but not a single one in Howard County.

Here’s how that compares to other similar-sized counties in Maryland (public vs. private/independent):

* Anne Arundel: 12 public, 4 others
* Harford County: 10 public, 2 others
* Frederick County: 10 public, 3 others
* Carroll County: 8 public, 2 others
